Upper School sculpture

A Seat at the Table

This collaborative conceptual art installation was created by Upper School Sculpture class, as well as several teachers, and also has a performance piece done by the Middle School Dance class. Each student in the sculpture class personalized their own wooden chair, expressing his/her identity through various artistic techniques, materials, and methodology, and by using a multi/mixed approach. Students were further encouraged to identify themselves by gender, ethnicity, culture, personality, exceptionality, hobbies, affinities, relative strengths, and or/ sexual orientation. The dance choreography may be loosely interpreted as an abstract variant of the familiar game of ‘musical chairs’, whereby someone is always ‘left out.’ In total, all of these powerful design elements were intentionally chosen to bring the point home: social justice is a lofty ideal, yet we should not desist in our pursuit of it.
