MCDS began when L.B. Sommers resigned as principal at Homestead High School and Doc began looking for a place to build their school.
Location of the school laid in the triangle, bounded by N.E. Sixth Avenue above the Miami Shores; N.E. 107th Street, a part of the northern boundary that Miami Shores Country Club; and on the diagonal, the Biscayne Canal (or “River”)
Today: The location of the school is still in the lot that Sommers and Abele built their original school.

William D. Ellis, writer of the Hibiscus Hedge and one of the first teachers stated, “I was always made to feel welcome at MCDS and always felt that it was a home to me.”
The welcoming that Mr. Ellis felt is a core value of MCDS today as all are welcomed and loved within the MCDS community.
The original campus contained twelve acres and was a beautiful area along the Biscayne River north of the new Miami Shores golf course. Situated as it was, the campus was truly a “garden spot”, alive with trees, shrubs, flowers, and singing birds.
The campus being alive with trees and plants is still true today as MCDS prides itself on being a green campus. Students, parents, and visitors experience sceneries of green grass, native Florida flowers, and trees that are all around the campus grounds.

He also set up a highly organized and dynamically led program of physical education and intermural games.
Today, it could be said that Charlie Rice’s influence on the school’s sports program has continued today as MCDS has 36 athletic teams that have gone on to win state championships, succeeded in regionals, and districts.

The presentation of an annual Christmas play and afternoon crafts became popular by Charlie Edwards. A play is still done today before Holiday break and students have afternoon/afterschool clubs.
Charlie Edwards would hand paint eight separate scenes on building paper, layer on layer, and when all the lights went out between the scenes, he would rip each layer of paper scenery as required.
Today, the involvement in the theater is still emphasized as students are given the responsibility, with the help of their teachers, to put on a play.
