Through acting, stagecraft, musical theatre, playwriting, directing, and technical production, students develop confidence while learning what it means to be part of an ensemble.
The theatre program supports both talented beginners and advanced performers through structured training, process-oriented work, and meaningful performance opportunities. Students are encouraged to discover their strengths, take creative risks, and grow as artists on stage and behind the scenes.

Acting and Performance
Students develop the skills necessary to become thoughtful, expressive, and versatile performers. Through acting, scene study, characterization, voice and movement training, and performance-based experiences, students learn how to communicate authentically and creatively on stage.
As they advance through the program, students explore a variety of theatrical forms and storytelling techniques, including dramatic performance, musical theatre, directing, devised work, and film acting. Opportunities to create, perform, and collaborate help students strengthen their artistic voice while gaining confidence as performers and storytellers.
Students may also explore acting for the camera, directing, and short film creation, expanding their understanding of performance beyond the traditional stage and preparing them for a variety of creative pathways.
Stagecraft and Technical Theatre
Theatre production extends far beyond what audiences see on stage. Students interested in the technical and design aspects of theatre can explore the many creative disciplines that bring productions to life.
Through hands-on experiences in technical theatre and stagecraft, students develop practical skills while gaining an appreciation for the collaborative nature of production. Areas of exploration may include:
- Lighting and technical design
- Stage management
- Production design
- Stage makeup
- Backstage operations
- Technical collaboration and problem-solving
Whether working under the spotlight or behind the scenes, students learn how each element contributes to the success of a theatrical production while developing leadership, creativity, and professional responsibility.

Recognition at the District and State Level
MCDS theatre students have earned recognition at local, state, and national levels through competitions, festivals, and conferences.
Recent Thespian achievements include:
- Junior Thespians earning Top Honors and Superior ratings at the District Festival
- Upper School Thespians earning multiple Top Honors, Superior, and Excellent ratings at the Florida District 8 Thespian Conference
- Recognition in performance, monologue, duet acting, duet musical, ensemble acting, solo musical, pantomime, playwriting, student directing, choreography, costume design, makeup design, scenic design, publicity direction, and large group musical categories
- Florida State Thespian Conference recognition, including Best in State for Playwriting
- Superior and Excellent ratings at the state level in acting, directing, makeup design, monologue, large group performance, ensemble acting, and playwriting
Beyond the Stage
Master Classes, Travel, and Pre-Professional Growth
MCDS theatre students experience learning beyond the classroom through master classes, travel, and exposure to professional theatre environments.
Students may participate in master classes with Broadway professionals and take part in the annual New York City intensive, where they experience theatre in one of the world’s leading performing arts centers.
These opportunities help students understand the discipline, preparation, and creative commitment required for advanced theatre study and professional performance.
A Signature Pathway for Dedicated Theatre Artists
The Theatre Arts Diploma Endorsement is an advanced Upper School pathway for students who demonstrate a strong commitment to theatre and wish to pursue a deeper, more personalized artistic journey.
Through sustained coursework, portfolio development, service learning, faculty mentorship, jury review, and a culminating showcase, theatre students have the opportunity to refine their craft, reflect on their growth, and share their work with the community.
The endorsement is designed for students who want to move beyond participation and toward deeper artistic purpose, discipline, and voice.
