In each school, Hiram was able to help refine his teaching style and philosophy into what it is today. Hiram has always been a “student first” type of educator who looks to empower his students, so that they develop the key analytical and interpretative skills needed in todays global markets. It has always been a goal of Hiram’s to teach his students how to express their historical opinions in a collegiate verbal and written format. Hiram wants his students to understand how history is more than just the textbook, and that one-day they will help shape the world that they live in through knowing how we have lived.

However, when teaching Ceramics and Sculpture, both 3-D forms of art, she finds that Geometry often plays a large part in the process. She enjoys seeing the tangible, real-world integration of those two seemingly disparate disciplines. She is also a proud member of the Learning Resources Program at MCDS, currently teaching 12th grade College Mathematics to students with documented learning differences. She holds her National Board Certification in secondary art education, is a national affiliate artist at SOHO20 Gallery in New York City, and has associate artist membership at the Bakehouse Art Complex in Miami, as well as the Detroit Artist’s Market. Mark Runge
Art Teacher, Upper School
Arts – Studio, Upper School

Mark has always been an artist. As a young child, he illustrated and bound into books invented stories. He ran wild through the woods bringing to life out of the refuse of others friends with whom he could play and places that existed only in his mind. Some of Mark’s most influential art moments occurred on stormy, Florida nights when the power went out and his family gathered at the kitchen table to draw by lamplight.Mark’s formal art training began in grade school, where his handwriting was so bad that a teacher took a special interest in him (Thank you, Mrs. Coleman!). She used art to help him improve his writing; his penmanship is still pretty bad, but the art certainly took! He went onto a vocational high school and for three hours a day studied graphic art. He learned to set type, run presses, and work with substrates like paper and board. He was introduced to the importance of design, color theory, and many of the art practices he uses today. Mark’s college career started at Hillsborough Community College in Tampa, Florida, wound its way up to the Maryland Institute, College of Art, in Baltimore, Maryland, and culminated when he earned a Masters of Fine Arts degree from the University of South Florida.

His first teaching position was with the Board of Education in New York City where he spent the first 11 years teaching in both public and private schools in NYC. After relocating to Florida, he spent two years in the public school system. Tired of teaching to a test, I found a position at MCDS in 2011, which matched my teaching style.
