By Stella Espenkotter, Class of 2027
At Miami Country Day School, Walk with Purpose is our largest student-run community service event, bringing students, families, faculty, and friends together to support Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. It is an opportunity to put our school’s mission into action, serving the greater community with purpose, compassion, honor, and wisdom.
Now a senior, I have been involved since eighth grade, served as co-chair in tenth grade, and have been a chair for the past two years. Each year has deepened my appreciation for the work behind the walk and the difference we can make together.
What I love most is how many students contribute to this special day. Different committees take responsibility for planning and coordinating different aspects of the event. Each group brings its own ideas and energy, but we all share one goal: creating a meaningful experience that brings our community together for a cause beyond ourselves. Watching months of collaboration come to life on the day of the walk feels magical.
My favorite moment happens just before we begin. Our entire extended community gathers close together beneath the arch, and the anticipation builds. Looking around, I see the students who helped plan the event alongside the people who have come to support it. Then we take our first steps, moving forward as one.
As we walk together, conversations and shared smiles create a sense of connection. Every step reflects why we are there: to support those facing cancer and contribute to the work of Dana-Farber. For me, that is what makes Walk with Purpose so special. We turn our compassion into action and show what it means to be Spartans.
