GATEway Jr. is a 1-week cultural study program in Puerto Rico, the province of Québec, Canada, and Panamá (each site offered on rotating years). The program is considered a 3-year sequence and, while participating all years is optional, it is highly encouraged in order to benefit from experiencing each unique site. Students who participate in at least two programs will be awarded a special diploma at the end of 8th grade. Participation may be non-sequential but students must attend at least two sites for the special recognition.

(Please note, students will not miss school on Monday or Tuesday, as we will be observing the Presidents’ Day holiday.  Wednesday and Thursday will be block days, therefore, students will only miss class once.  Friday is a half-day with shortened classes due to Grandparents’ Day).

Puerto Rico – La Isla del Encanto
Officially known as “El Estado Libre Asociado de Puerto Rico,” or a commonwealth of the United States, Puerto Rico enjoys a rich and diverse history. Having either been a part of Spain or the United States since 1493, Puerto Rico is a fusion of cultures. A bilingual island of 3.2 million inhabitants, the Boricua people are proud of who they are and where they are going. Puerto Rico’s food, language, traditions, and people all tell a story…a story that celebrates the past, honors the present, and looks toward the future. As citizens of the United States, the Puerto Rican people enjoy a unique relationship with the mainland – one that is filled with hope, uncertainty, and connection. Three years after Hurricane Maria, GATEway Jr. is thrilled to finally make its way to the island…and Puerto Rico is ready for GATEway!
GATEmates will take a seminar-style course of approximately 3 hours spread over the course of the week. Other educational and cultural activities will enhance the student’s experience and create a study and cultural opportunity unique to Miami Country Day School.
Expected excursions include:
  • Old San Juan city tour
  • El Yunque National Forest and zipline
  • Castillo San Felipe del Morro
  • Bioluminescent Bay
  • Arecibo Observatory
  • Catamaran and snorkel
  • Salsa dance class
