Update on Athletics for the fall

Dear Members of the MCDS Community,

Athletics are an integral part of many students’ educational experience, and the Miami Country Day School community takes great pride in the accomplishments of our student-athletes, both in and out of the classroom and on and off the field. Over the last few months, our Athletic Department has been working on plans for the return of school sports this fall. We have been following local and national trends, as well as working with other South Florida independent schools and the Florida High School Athletic Association (FHSAA).  As many of you are aware, the FHSAA Executive Board held an emergency meeting on July 23rd to discuss fall sports. Similar to many other state high school associations, the FHSAA voted to delay the start of the fall season until August 24th. Although the FHSAA has identified a start date for fall sports of August 24th, they have given schools the opportunity to determine a fall athletic season that suits each school’s needs. In addition, teams will still be eligible for FHSAA playoffs no matter their start date.

In the event we have an on-campus start to the academic year, Miami Country Day School, along with many other schools, has opted for a fall sports start date of no earlier than August 31st. We are exploring the option of beginning voluntary athletic workouts that meet local CDC guidelines prior to that date, but the earliest formal team practices will begin is August 31st. Schedules will be built around our competitors’ athletic policies. Our decision is consistent with what many other private and public schools are doing in South Florida and other areas throughout the state.

We will continue to monitor this unique landscape and work to provide the safest environment for our student-athletes, coaches, and Spartan community. We will follow up with further information on our return to play protocols and procedures as we get closer to beginning athletic activities on campus.
