Study Buddies
Helping children learn and excel is the goal of juniors Sophia G and Maria P. Planning together since last May, they recently initiated MCDS' “Study Buddies”, a tutorial program for the children of Miami Shores Elementary. Meeting every Tuesday, from 4 pm to 5 pm, a team of Study Buddies will assist students, from 2nd to 5th grade, with math, reading, and homework assignments.
Both MSE Principal Brenda Swain, and Community School Specialist Jessica Davis, warmly welcomed our first group of volunteer tutors on Tuesday, October 3rd. In a later communication, Ms. Davis wrote, “I am excited to begin working with you … our kids are in dire need of the services your program will provide.” She explained that there are approximately 150 students enrolled in the after-school care program at MSE. Most parents struggle to pay the extra fees for childcare and cannot afford tutoring for their children who need assistance. Some are just learning English and cannot help their children with assignments. Tutoring help by MCDS students is highly valued and greatly appreciated.
Study Buddies Faculty Sponsor Mrs. Lucchi is no stranger to Miami Shores Elementary. Having successfully coordinated the “All-Aboard” Reading program years ago at the same site. She understands the difference our students can make to the elementary students, “Helping a child acquire reading skills is life-changing. It is simply the best gift you can give. You are giving them a future. I know of no better way to demonstrate Miami Country Day School’s core values, than to help our little neighbors in need.”
We hope that more MCDS students will volunteer as tutors so the program may expand to include teams for additional weekdays. The ability to speak another language is not required but Creole and Spanish speaking students are encouraged to mentor young children as they acquire English language skills. The only requirement is generosity in sharing your time, knowledge, and heart with children.
