3. Job Title: Pediatric Palliative Care Nurse Coordinator

4. Employer: Holtz Children's Hospital at Jackson Memorial Hospital

5. Years worked in this industry: 13 years

6. How has your role and your day to day responsibilities changed since the COVID- 19 Pandemic?

I am currently working remotely from home. I am helping to provide support to our patients, families, and staff during this stressful time through telehealth and zoom conferences. I am also working closely with our outpatient population to ensure they have all the resources needed in hopes of allowing them to stay out of the hospital during this time.

7. What are some of the challenges you and your colleagues are facing due to the pandemic?

Palliative care is a very personal specialty at the hospital. We get to know our patients and families during the most sensitive and traumatic times in their lives.  It has been difficult accepting that we are not meeting face to face or there to hold a hand or wipe a tear when they need us most.  It can feel very distant to have very difficult conversations over the phone or through a computer screen.

8. With this shift in your personal and professional life, how are you practicing self-care?

Working from home with a toddler has been a challenge.  We have been enjoying short breaks taking walks and swimming in the pool.

9. What advice or words of wisdom would you like to give to our Spartan community?

I remind myself that as much of a challenge as this is, I have been given the gift to spend this uninterrupted time with my family without some of the distractions we typically are faced with. The memories we have made during this time are ones I will always treasure.  Working remotely can make us feel like we aren’t doing anything to help, but in the end, each of us is doing our parts by staying in and remaining distant from one another.  Together we will get through this and I do believe we will be a stronger community when this is past us.
