Community Partners

Miami Shores South Florida People of Color

Miami Shores South Florida People of Color (SFPoC) is a 501(c)(3)non-profit racial healing organization. SFPoC’s mission is to be a racial healing organization dedicated to disrupting racism and bigotry by providing creative programs for open dialogue and personal connection across the racial, ethnic and cultural divide.
SFPoC is MCDS’s partner in addressing our specific challenges to equity and inclusion. The objective is to heal and to promote insight and understanding around issues of race and DEI for the entire MCDS community. We recognize that truly building and maintaining a school culture of kindness, empathy and inclusion takes a holistic and ongoing approach.

Our faculty trainings engage our community in personal reflection, examine common beliefs and biases and investigate methods of teaching about these topics. They explore strategies for facilitating critical conversations with students and colleagues.
The student DEI training provides historically relevant and discipline-specific knowledge regarding DEI movements, best practices and resources so students are equipped to increase awareness, promote advocacy and inspire collective activism.
The Parent Association’s Diversity Committee hosted an Awkward Dinner this month, facilitated by SFPoC, to discuss race and race relations as well as the way diversity and inequity impacts education.

Yes Institute of Miami

The mission of YES Institute is to prevent suicide and ensure the healthy development of all youth through powerful communication and research-based education on gender and orientation.
They began as a community-based initiative in 1996 to address the high rates of teenage suicide impacting young people who identified or were labeled as gay.
YES Institute conducts over 200 presentations and courses for a wide variety of communities each year. Their continuing education curriculum is accredited by the Florida Department of Health and the Miami-Dade County Public Schools.

Breakthrough Miami

    • Breakthrough Miami

The collaboration between Miami Country Day School and Breakthrough Miami combines two communities with the common goal and expectation that their students strive to do as best as they are capable. Breakthrough Miami is a tuition-free academic enrichment program and named the best summer learning program in the country by the National Summer Learning Association in 2018. MCDS provides significant site and in-kind resources on their campus.
The Breakthrough Miami scholars at our MCDS site are welcomed to a nurturing environment and hail from a number of under-resourced areas of Miami, such as Liberty City, Little Havana, Little Haiti, Opa-Locka, Overtown and Carol City.
This peer mentoring model ensures these students have access to excellent educational opportunities. During the past five years, more than 92% of Breakthrough Miami graduates have entered four-year colleges, compared with 39% of low-income students nationwide.
Breakthrough Miami and Miami Country Day joined together to assist students from underprivileged schools throughout Miami-Dade County. This collaboration is going on its 9th year of success, and we see nothing but more life-changing results to emerge as we continue striving to bridge the achievement gap.
