Important Update for Parents of 2nd through 5th Grade Students

Dear Parents of 2nd through 5th Grade Students,
Now more than ever, schools are faced with answering the question, “How will we utilize technology to help children achieve and prepare for the world?”  This spring, we were forced to explore the many facets of this very important question. Due to the unusual circumstances we found ourselves in, we witnessed the important role technology played even for our youngest learners. This interactive tool helped us communicate, collaborate, and create. Our students were able to connect with their teachers, access materials to enrich and broaden their learning, and expand their knowledge of the world around them. As we prepare for next year, we have crafted a carefully considered age appropriate plan that will ensure all our children have access to this important tool.
Beginning with the 2020-2021 academic year, all students from 2nd through 5th Grade will be required to supply their own laptops for engaging with our school community and completing their academic work.
One of the main principles of our “BYOD” (Bring your Own Device) program is that students have flexibility in selecting the laptops that best suit their academic needs and learning styles. You and your child will have the opportunity of selecting any Mac or Windows laptop, as long as it meets our minimum specifications (click here for laptop specifications).
We continually work with all students to ensure that they have the skills and software necessary to successfully use their laptops in support of their learning. We provide special support at the start of school for students who are logging into school systems with their own laptop for the first time.
PC Laptops may be purchased through our affiliated vendor, MobileMe IT. Laptops purchased in this way are covered by a complete three-year warranty including accidental damage and will be maintained and supported by MobileMe IT. Although our ITS group works closely with them, the school is not financially involved and derives no income from the sale or repair of these laptops. Use this link: http://www.mobilemeit.com to access their website and then click “School Stores” to view the models available. If you decide to purchase a laptop through MobileMe IT, you may do so through the same link above. Laptops purchased in this way will be delivered directly to you.
Should you wish to use another vendor to purchase a laptop, make sure that it meets or exceeds the minimum specifications, which are listed below. The laptop warranty is particularly important. Your warranty should allow for local repair and should cover accidental damage, preferably for at least three years. Please note that due to incompatibilities with testing and other application, iPads and Chromebooks do not meet the necessary requirements for student laptops.
Miami Country Day School continues to honor our commitment to educating the whole child.  We understand the necessity of hands-on, multi-sensory learning and play. The plan shared above, will increase access to one of the many tools that we will use to foster your child’s growth.
Should you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us.
