Miami Country Day School Hackathon 2018

The Miami Country Day School’s Fifth Annual Hackathon was held in the school’s new Garner Innovation Center on Saturday, December 8th from 10:00 am -3:30 pm. Participants ranged in grade level from third grade through high school seniors. Nine teams in total competed. The hackers created their apps, games and inventions using the programming language and environment of their choice working with student and faculty facilitators, seniors Ben Kreger, Felipe Rangel, and Isabella Pedraza, junior Daniel Espinal, and faculty members Phil Cahill, Wendy Wyka, and Beth Long.
Judges included:

Lindsay George, CIO at MCDS
Antonio Manueco, CTO at BetaBlocks, Managing Partner at blubeta, Founder at Wynwood Tech and MCDS alumnus
Hunter Sonn, Software Engineer at Citrix
James Connor, Interim Head of School at MCDS
Each team presented their idea for the judges and answered questions from the judging panel and audience. The judges had to make a tough choice, but after much deliberation determined the overall winners: Jake Wyka (Class of 2023) and non-MCDS student Jared Gardner .
This year's first and second prizes were generously donated by UDT (United Data Technologies).
Thank you to Richard Sardinas for coordinating the donation from his company.
Thanks also to Citrix and Hunter Sonn for donating the third and fourth place prizes as well as providing giveaways for all of our hackers.
This year’s t-shirts were designed by Ben Kreger who also organized the Hackathon and headed up the committee of student facilitators. Trophies were designed and 3-D printed at the Garner Innovation Center by Daniel Espinal (MCDS Class of 2020).
