Creative Inventions

Rube Goldberg n. a comically involved, complicated invention, laboriously contrived to perform a simple operation – Webster’s New World Dictionary

For the past couple of weeks students in the 8th grade have been working long and hard to create the perfect invention.  You would think this would be an easy task, but on the contrary, this task takes time, special attention to detail, patience and a whole lot of creativity.  This is what some of the students had to say:

Team members - Chanel, Isaac and Ricky used the following words to describe their invention experience;  super fun, complex, intense, fun & creative.

Tyler – Fun and a lot of work, but most important it thaught me how important it is when picking partners.

Madison – It was really fun and hard at the same time.  In the end you really know your machine well.

Isabela – Showed me how intelligent Rube Goldberg was and how difficult it is to actually invent and build a machine.

Emil – Even though the project was time consuming, all of the hard work had good outcomes.

Jordan – The project helped me be creative and get into a creative mind set for other school tasks.

Teddy – I thought this was a very socializing experience; it helped me learn how to cooperate and work with my peers.

As you can well see, this project does not just teach the students about science, it teaches them how to communicate, interact with different students with different ideas, be creative and most importantly -  that learning can be fun.

CONGRATULATIONS Class of 2010

After 12 years of hard work the Miami Country Day’s Class of 2010 can finally celebrate a great milestone in their life.  On Sunday, May 23 our senior class along with family and friends celebrated graduation at the Miami Dade County Auditorium.  The ceremony was full of excitement, laughter and of course a joke here and there.  We wish the Class of 2010 the best of luck in all of their future endeavors.

4/13/10 spARTan Show

spARTan Show in the Works

The school is abuzz as the spARTan show gets close.  Upper School students helped Lower School students create artwork for this exciting event.  Students used crayons and watercolors to create some unique art pieces.  Both groups of students enjoyed exploring their creative side and helping other do the same. www.miamicountryday.org/spARTanRSVP

3/12/10 Buoyancy Cup 2010

  Spartans on the Water

On you mark, get set, go.  That is how students started this year’s Annual Buoyancy Cup. Teams of students in Lower, Middle and Upper School had to think “outside of the box” to make a boat and paddles using only cardboard, glue and duct tape. The boat had to be able to complete one or two lengths of the pool in a race for bragging rights. The boats ranged from speed boats to pirate ships and everything in between. Students spent hours of their free time working on building and strategizing what would be the best model boat. After hours of working and planning, some teams made it the whole way and others took a dive in the pool. At the end of the day, both students participating as well as the spectators enjoyed this yearly tradition that not only gives the students a break from the classroom, but also teaches them valuable lessons for life.
