The Social Potential

Miami Country Day School understands the importance of social understanding.  With ten honor societies, twenty service clubs, and seventeen special interest clubs, students are encouraged to not just sign up, but actively participate in activities of interest.  Leadership opportunities exist not only in the individual clubs, but also in the student council.  Student Government provides student representation in the school community and a greater sense of responsibility, leadership, and cooperation among students.

Twenty-one percent of our student body come from the international community representing over thirty-two countries.  Our faculty and staff promote a respect for others by fostering an appreciation, understanding, and tolerance for individual differences.  Students develop a sense of social responsibility and learn to make ethical decisions that will benefit the community and society.  We believe that it is our obligation to serve others and give back to the communities in which we live.  This belief is an integral part of our school, our mission statement, and our curriculum.

To enhance the well-rounded educational experience, the Comprensive Outdoor Education Program (COEP) challenges students in three major areas: academic skills, outdoor and physical skills, and group and individual leadership skills.  In-class curriculum prepares students for outdoor challenges including camping, backpacking, and canoeing.  The program begins with topics such as local, state, and national history with an emphasis on recreational land usage, environmental and ecological issues, zoological and botanical studies, journal writing and development of individual interests in related areas, such as literature, art, or photography.  During the second year, students develop field experience with monthly weekend backpacking, camping, and/or canoeing trips in order to actively develop individual and group skills.  Continued work with the program enhances and develops leadership, teamwork, and individual goals and expectations.  COEP complements and enhances traditional education by offering hands-on experience in life skills that provides students necessary tools to meet the challenges of the 21st century.
